The Headstones of St Mary’s Abbey

Recorded, Photographed and Digitised by

Duleek Heritage Group

It is one of the aims of Duleek Heritage Group and part of our constitution to preserve historical sites and buildings, to raise awareness and stress the importance of maintaining our local heritage and to promote the diverse rich history of Duleek and to uphold and defend these ideals.

The object of this project was to photograph, do some rubbings, code and number headstones, measure the height and width of headstones, transcribe as much of each inscription that as was legible at the time of recording from each headstone, digitise this information and make it available on the internet. Our plan was to have all the information transcribed with photographs available on the internet to assist ancestral and genealogy researchers and for the past, present and future people of Duleek.

   Introduction

From 2005 until early 2013 Duleek Heritage Group took on the project of St. Mary’s Abbey.  The object of this project was to photograph, do some rubbings, code and number headstones, measure the height and width of headstones, transcribe as much of each inscription that was legible at the time of recording from each headstone, digitise this information and make it available on the internet. Our plan was to have all the information transcribed with photographs available on the internet to assist ancestral and genealogy researchers and for the past, present and future people of Duleek.

A local historian, the late Enda O’Boyle, had recorded the inscriptions of St. Mary’s Abbey and the plaques in St. Kienan’s Church of Ireland church for an issue of Riocht Na Midhe in 2000.  Enda had started his project in 1975 and had completed it by 2000.  The Duleek Heritage Graveyard Committee are very respectful and in awe of the amount of time and effort that Enda put into his recordings and it is at this point that we would like to extend our gratitude to Enda for his preservation, works and recordings of the old churchyard and of the history of Duleek.
